    This paper examines the benefits of joint venture projects and identifies those factors which appear to be key to success in construction joint ventures with particular reference to joint venture projects in Malaysia. Initially those factors which appeared from previous studies to be critical were identified through a literature review. Through a survey subsequently administered to both local and foreign construction organisations in Malaysia these initial factors were confirmed to be relevant. Twenty-one factors were identified through these processes as deemed critical to the success of joint venture projects. In-depth interviews were subsequently conducted to validate the survey findings and to evaluate the perception of the local and foreign contractors. Delphi Techniques were then used to verify both the survey and interviews and to obtain a confirmed and prioritised schedule of Critical Success Factors as well as some factors, which would contribute to reducing the likelihood of failure [Failure Reduction Criteria]. The identification of these factors will support the successful application of joint venture arrangements in construction projects in Malaysia, but the techniques applied could be transferable to another geographical arena.
